Marlow Sports Club

New Clubhouse Project
Marlow is justifiably proud if it’s sporting heritage and at the heart of this is Marlow Sports Club (MSC) where sport has been played in the town since 1871. Marlow Sports Club was founded in 1949 to run and develop sporting activities played on the site (click here for more on the history of MSC). Nowadays young and old can play Cricket, Hockey, Tennis, Football and Pétanque plus run with the Striders, cycle with the Riders and Canoe to the river.
Although the sports playing facilities are outstanding, unfortunately we have outgrown our outdated clubhouse buildings. Our “Old Pavilion” (left in photo) was built in the early 1900s and despite refurbishment has limited use and costly ancient plumbing and electrics. The “New Pavilion” (right in photo) was built in 1973 but there is a lack of access for all, limited toilets and inadequate changing facilities (especially for women) as well as high maintenance costs.

To address this we have developed plans to upgrade our facilities that will be delivered in two phases:
-
Phase 1 – replace the “Old Pavilion” with a new 2 storey block plus entrance and lift
-
Phase 2 – refit of the “New Pavilion” once the new block is in place
The benefits and key considerations of this project include:
-
4 large and 2 small all gender changing rooms each with integral toilet and showers
-
Access for all with a ramp, lift , wider doors and accessible toilets and shower
-
A new Community Room, creating opportunities for midweek use by other local groups
-
A larger Club Room and bar with a new toilet block on the first floor
-
A new balcony overlooking the hockey pitch and a new tea and coffee kiosk
-
Reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs
-
All on the current site with broadly the same footprint and a more attractive appearance
With these improvements we aim to create a clubhouse which supports not only sport but the wider Marlow community.

Funding the Project
We aim to deliver the project in two phases in order to maintain facilities for our sports during the work and to spread the costs and fundraising:
-
Phase 1 - Replace the ‘old’ pavilion with a new 2-storey block (approx £1.2m)
-
Phase 2 - Redevelop the ‘new’ pavilion both upstairs and downstairs (approx £0.8m)
To complete the 2 phases of our clubhouse development we need to raise £2 million which is a mammoth amount of money. To do this we have created an MSC cross-section fundraising team to develop initiatives for all members of the club and the external community to contribute with options for all ranges of affordability.
